Have You Every Thought, During Your Morning Routine, “i Think I’m Going To Be In An Accident? “
If you are like me, the only 6th sense you have is this nagging feeling that you forgot something like picking up your dry cleaning, or where you left your keys. Whether a product of my upbringing, or lack of chemical or electromagnetic airwave exposure, I have never been able to anticipate an impending doom. That all changed for me today. I felt absolutely sure I was going to have a serious car accident today on the way to work.
What would you do with this information? I was overwhelmed, justified or not. Please grant me a few words about why this is so rare and troubling for me. I am an accident and injury lawyer. You are probably thinking “good riddance,” but remember it takes two for an accident so at least have compassion for the other victim. Seriously, I represent victims and write about other people overcoming the trouble of accidents. It is rare that I fantasize, as I am called upon to often be very pragmatic. The only exception is my spiritual adventure, developed from a sense of omnipresence rather than understanding.
Nor can I explain that this premonition arose from some previous event. This last weekend was as usual, a blend of family and friend time. Last night I slept fitfully, although dreaming incessantly. You know the feeling, that you cannot recall any details but knew you covered a lot of subjects.
I woke as normal, and the premonition, if that is what we can call it, was not immediate. It occurred to me after saying hello to my 10 year old daughter at breakfast. She ignored my morning greeting, a product of staying up last night endlessly playing Poke-E-Mon under her covers according to my wife.
As I was shaving, in that moment where your mind wanders, or focuses on the day’s tasks, I stopped dead in my “trac” shave. I had a very real, nagging thought that I would have an auto accident this morning on the way to work. Not just a fender bender, but a serious collision. I even identified the intersection in Irvine, an intersection I only drive on Mondays because of freeway traffic.
I cannot tell you how or why I had this feeling, nor was it visual. It was just a thought, but very clear, like remembering some previously experience, with details of the place, the weather and the actions. It is as if I had already been in the accident, and was remembering it today. The only problem, I have never had a serious accident.
A bit concerned, I said nothing to my family, and decided to work from home in the AM. How silly, really, to believe this thought could be a reality. I can hear the boss, if I worked for one. “You don’t want to come into work because of a vision?” “No boss, not a vision because I did not see it, a premonition that I felt.” Fortunately, people work for me.
As I sat to open my e-mails and start my day, I came across my normal briefings, and one caught my eye. This is the first work day after Day Light Savings. Could this be related? I could not see how! Soon busy with those many urgent matters, I forgot about my premonition until 10:30 when the focus of urgency gave way to the normal tone of work to complete.
At 10:00am I thought about going to in to work. Then it dawned on me, could I actually have set myself up for the event? We spring forward and fall back, right? “Is it really 9:00 am and if I left now, would I set the collision into motion,” I asked almost out loud.
Worse, and embarrassingly, I began to think as if in some Total Recall movie. If I changed my travel time, has the time dimension been inexorably changed? If I left now, might I have an even greater disaster? How silly, but I worked until lunch, leaving my desk only to get something to eat.
I checked the Irvine Police blotter at 1:30, no accident at the scene. At least I did not cause someone to take my place, fulfilling some event/occurrence celestial calculation.
I got a call from a friend. He needed some legal counsel. I spent an hour with him. I know what you are thinking; no he did not have an accident. Finished advising him, he offered to pick me up to hit a few golf balls in the afternoon. I thought about telling him I could not go and why, but thought better of it. Besides, the morning had passed, and he was driving, so I said yes.
He picked me up and we went to a local course of his selection. I knew the course and it is a block or two off the freeway we were travelling on. Suddenly, he got off the freeway a bit early, two off-ramps early, even though there was no traffic. He turned onto the street that would intersect with my troublesome intersection. I began to get a little nervous, but was not willing to tell him my silly secret. We arrived at the intersection as he stopped at a red light 3 cars back.
Not only had I not planned to be at this intersection today, but I never go golfing or even to practice on Mondays. How upsetting. I sat very nervous, and when the light turned green several cars ahead of us proceeded, as did we. We went through the intersection without incident, and three blocks later pulled into the golf course center.
I got out of the car a little shaken. Apparently I was upset enough for my friend to notice. He asked if I was all right, I said yes. We went to the practice area and I simply could not relax. I struck the golf ball poorly for about 10 minutes, prompting a bit of ribbing from my friend. I decided to ask my friend what he thought. After mentioning the premonition, and the mind numbing early exit from the freeway to travel through that exact intersection, he looked up from his golf ball and stood rather stiffly. At first I thought he was going to tell me I was nuts. Instead he just looked at me for what seemed an eternity.
I asked him why the stare. He said ” I got off the freeway early because I thought it would be faster, but it was just a premonition I had at the moment. I never exit there. Do you think it was fate?” He then broke into a big grin and shuffled his feet a bit, knowing that an opportunity to chide me does not come often, and his comment may have been a little too strong. I accused him, with a few choice words, of being a big divot, actually a body part rarely exposed. He smiled and told me the only accident I was likely to have today was to hit a great golf shot.
It takes a friend to help you realize that your premonitions may just be a coincidence. It takes a real friend to make you realize that whatever the reason, destiny would have it. I was to travel through that intersection today. I made him drive home a different way,both of us laughing at the moment.
